Products and Tips to Care for Your Hair at Home

With a stay-at-home order in effect until late this month in Kansas City, many of our Glam Room customers are concerned about home care for their hair. Instead of experimenting on your own, we recommend that you contact your Glam Room stylist or colorist to get advice about the best products for your hair to help maintain your style. In the meantime, there are several things you can do to help keep your hair looking great and feeling soft and silky. We offer online virtual consultation to ensure your hair stays the way you want it until you can get in with us.

Avoid heat. When you’re away from your regular Glam Room stylist, you’ll want to avoid anything that might cause damage. Heat is one of the worst culprits because it can damage the bonds that make your hair strong, leading to dry, brittle hair, breakage, and frizz. Your hair is exposed to heat when you take a hot shower, when you’re out in the hot sun for a long time on a summer’s day, and when you use heated styling tools.

The best way to avoid heat is to change up your style so you don’t need to use heated styling tools every day. This is the perfect time to embrace your natural hair texture and try a few styles that enhance this texture with braids, ponytails, or simple updos that work with your natural curl instead of straightening it. If your hair is naturally straight and you usually use a curling iron, take advantage of the flexibility straight hair offers by trying different twists and braided styles.

If you absolutely need a heated styling tool for your style, use a heat protectant product before styling to minimize damage. Your Glam Room stylist can help you choose the perfect L’Oréal Professionnel product for your needs.

Finally, dial the heat back a bit when taking a shower by rinsing in warm water instead of hot when you shampoo and condition your hair.

Celebrate your color. With so many customers temporarily separated from their Glam Room colorist, many are concerned about fading color and dark roots. If this is an issue for you, there are a couple of ways to handle it.

If you want to cover up those roots, a professional root concealer spray or powder is a great option. L’Oréal Professionnel Hair Touchup comes in a variety of colors and can temporarily cover up dark roots or grey hair in between salon visits. Ask your Glam Room colorist to recommend the right product for your hair color, texture, and type.

Another option is to embrace the darker roots. This is especially easy now, since a top trend for spring 2020 is shadow roots, that “shadow” effect you get when darker roots contrast your hair color. As a top trend for spring, and with so many others also temporarily unable to get to the salon, you can embrace your darker roots as a new spring hair color!

Going without your regular haircuts. Regular trims are an essential part of your hair care routine. While you’re at home, it’s a bad idea to try to cut your own hair – social media is full of examples of home haircut nightmares, and you definitely don’t want that. Instead, go with hair care over hair cutting, just until you can get back to your Glam Room stylist.

Start with conditioning, to keep your hair as healthy as possible, and avoid damage and split ends. Everyone needs a conditioner, not just people with dry hair. The trick is finding the right product for your hair type and texture. This is where your Glam Room stylist can help by recommending the right L’Oréal Professionnel conditioner and deep conditioner for your hair.

As your hair grows out, you can incorporate some new trends into your style, like curtain bangs, which are long, part in the middle, and flow gracefully into the rest of your style, as well as a temporary longer style than you normally wear, which you can pull back, arrange into a loose updo, or let flow naturally for a new spring style!

Staying at home is just temporary, and we look forward to seeing all our customers back at The Glam Room soon! In the meantime, use these tips to take good care of your hair, and plan for a new cut, style, or color once restrictions are lifted. With years of experience and professional tools and products from L’Oréal® and Pureology®, our professional stylists and colorists at The Glam Room will be ready to design the perfect new look for you. When you’re ready for an appointment, you can find us at 308 Delaware Street in Kansas City or call 816-605-1949 to schedule your appointment, or you can schedule your new haircut or color appointment right from your mobile device with our free mobile app, available on iTunes and Google Play.
