How BOTOX® Works to Give You Younger Looking Skin

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a proprietary formula of a compound called onobotulinumtoxinA that affects nerve signals. It’s the only formula of its kind to be FDA-approved to reduce certain lines and wrinkles.
 

How does BOTOX® work?

The first step in understanding how BOTOX® works is understanding the different ways that skin can end up with visible lines and wrinkles. The first way is an issue with the skin itself, from either skin damage or aging, that causes the skin’s natural rejuvenation processes to slow down. This leaves gaps in collagen proteins and skin cell renewal that result in sagging skin, uneven skin tone, and lines and wrinkles.
 

The second way skin can get wrinkles is from the underlying muscle tissue. Skin is held tight against the tissues and muscles below it, and this can affect the way the surface looks. In the face, there are 42 muscles that control movement. Some muscles are used more frequently than others, such as when we frown or smile, and over time, constant use of these muscles can affect the appearance of skin. The most common effects of long-term facial muscle use are wrinkles and lines in the forehead, near the eyes (“crow’s feet”), and near the mouth (frown lines). 
 

BOTOX® treats the second cause of wrinkles and lines. It works by blocking signals the brain sends to muscles in the treated area so that they no longer move the same way. The result is that the skin above these muscles appears smoother after your BOTOX treatment for a smoother, younger-looking appearance. 
 

How long do BOTOX® treatments last?

The effects of BOTOX® treatments are temporary, so follow-up treatments are needed to keep up the same effect. Everyone is different, so BOTOX® will last longer in some people, while others need more frequent follow-up appointments. Generally, most people see the effects of BOTOX® last three to four months.
