How BOTOX® Works to Fight Fine Lines and Wrinkles

There are several different reasons why we get those fine lines and wrinkles as we age. In some cases, it’s all about sun damage or cellular change caused by a slowdown in collagen production. In other cases, wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contractions. For these types of wrinkles, BOTOX® is an extremely effective treatment.

How do muscles cause wrinkles?
Whenever you frown, raise your eyebrows, squint, or make other facial movements, some areas of your skin fold up to create these expressions. With repeated muscle contractions over time, these folds can create permanent lines and wrinkles, particularly around your eyes, chin, and forehead.

How does BOTOX® work?
For lines and wrinkles caused by muscle contraction, BOTOX® injections block muscle contractions in strategic locations, effectively freezing the muscle movement that cause skin folds. This gives you a smoother look that softens the appearance of these fine lines and wrinkles.

What is in BOTOX®?
BOTOX® contains a purified form of botulinum toxin A. There’s no risk of contracting botulism because the solution is purified. However, in this form it does act locally to block muscle contractions that cause wrinkles.

What can I expect during a BOTOX® procedure?
Although BOTOX® is administered by injections, most people don’t experience much discomfort. In some cases, your med spa professional will numb your skin, but in most cases, this is not needed. during the procedure, your trained, experienced med spa professional will use tiny needles to inject small amounts of BOTOX® in strategic areas. The number of injections varies by each person, depending on which areas are treated, how many areas are treated, and the extent of wrinkles found in those areas.

How do I prepare for my procedure, and what can I expect afterward?
Your first step is a consultation with your med spa professional to ensure that BOTOX® is the right treatment for you, and to talk about your general health and things to avoid before the procedure. If you’ve had another BOTOX® injection within the past four months, BOTOX® may not be appropriate for you. Tell your med spa professional about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications for pain, allergies, or to help you sleep. Some of these medications may affect the way BOTOX® works, so you may be asked to discontinue them for several days before your procedure. In fact, people who take blood thinners may have to stop them for a week before the procedure to prevent bleeding or bruising.

There’s no downtime with BOTOX® treatments, so after your procedure you can return to your daily routine right away. However, you’ll need to be sure that you don’t rub on the area for the next 24 hours to ensure optimal results. Your med spa professional will give you specific aftercare instructions, including when to resume your medications if you have discontinued them.
